Upgrading Environments, to Receive

Why I woke up one morning and decided it was the time to let go of my furniture.

I’ve had the same bedroom furniture for 17 years. My bed and desk moved with me from our family home in Dubai, to our home in Pune. And yes, I know that’s the way it should be, and I’m proud of maintaining my furniture and making the most of it. But a week ago, I decided that the day had come to say goodbye and let this furniture go.

Here’s why.

  1. LETTING GO OF WHAT HOLDS YOU BACK

This furniture had been with me since I was 13. I will soon be 30. Lucky for me, the furniture is neutral shades of lavender and off white (and not hot pink  ;)) and technically worked to match my preferences as an adult, BUT, it still held so much of a version of me that no longer exists.

A few weeks ago a dear Mentor was home and as we walked into my room, my shoulders slumped a little and I said to him, “Welcome to the space of Chandni, the teenager …” The awareness of how this furniture was keeping me stuck in an old old self really surfaced in that moment, and that was the beginning of the end.

There are elements in our physical environment that keep us stuck in a version of ourselves that we no longer align to. This could be clothes, furniture, places we visit … They hold memories of a version of ourselves that we wish to say goodbye to, and are just no longer in alignment with the version of ourselves we are ready to anchor in. Keeping these elements in our lives, in the same way, prevents us from truly being able to move forward and fully step into the version of ourselves we desire to be.

I am not advocating donating all your clothes, or furniture, or anything extreme like that. I’m just inviting you to feel into any pieces in your life that are holding you back, and question what you can shift to no longer feel stuck because of these pieces. Perhaps you can find a new way of relating to these older pieces that feels like a good match for the version of you that you are ready to fully embody and express.

  2. PREPARING TO RECEIVE YOUR DESIRES

One of my big intentions for this year is to move countries and move out of my family home in Pune. While I don’t have a solid plan, I can feel in my bones that this is going to happen. (And this feeling in my bones has rarely ever been wrong before).

And so, I decided, I might as well start clearing my bedroom and making it more of a family space. Make things easier on my folks, and prepare for the big move.

When you ask for something in life, part of truly believing that you are going to receive it, is starting to prepare for it, even if you can’t see the full picture yet.

A question for you - is your physical environment aligned with what you are asking for in your life? If everything you asked were to be received right now, today, is your physical environment prepared?

  3. CALLING FORTH YOUR FUTURE SELF

This new room without the old furniture is such a beautiful space. Firstly there is so much space to breathe and think in here. Secondly, and very importantly, this room now closely resembles a room in my dream future home. A room where I meditate, pray, practice yoga, read, create … a sanctuary for my soul. Stepping into this room now makes me feel like I’m there, like I am in the future.

Different physical environments draw out different parts of who we are. For instance, your behavior when you are in your comfortable home pyjamas, vs your sexiest dress or tuxedo will be completely different. Similarly, a beautiful luxurious restaurant calls forth a version of ourselves that is different from who we’d be in a relaxed casual restaurant.

What version of you do you wish to stay centered in, and what physical environments naturally call forth this version of you? Can you design your life to spend more time in such environments, and hence more time being this version of you?

It’s incredible how simple changes in our physical environment can make such a massive difference to the way we feel and act, transforming the results we are available to in our lives.

I invite you to lean into this question - What do you need to clear out of your physical environment? What do you need to let go of? Just tune into the first thing that comes up in your awareness and take a small step towards this today.

We are hosting a live session ‘Lighten the Load - Physical Environments’, to help you accelerate the process of letting go of something in your physical environment, in order to be, do and have what you desire. We’d love to have you join us! Here is the link to register :)

P.S. For those of you interested to know - I gifted my furniture forward to the two lovely ladies who take amazing care of me and my home in Pune. Kasturi chose the bed and Aruna the desk. I did a little Marie Kondo ritual where I thanked my furniture for all memories, and the beautiful ways it had served me. I then prayed to clear the energy of the furniture of any imprints that are mine and blessed the furniture with love and a wish for it to continue to be of kind service to all those who use it in the future. Rituals like this can really help soothe the letting go process, for all involved, including the furniture :)
